Putting out fires
Last night, we worked in partnership with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to stage a safety exercise at the vacated Alexander House in Seaforth.
OVH lent the fire service the use of the building for an exercise that simulated conditions of recent high-rise fires.
In July 2009, six people died in a fire at the 12-storey Lakanal House in Camberwell, South London.
The fire exercise at Alexander House simulated traits of the Camberwell fire, such as the way the fire skipped floors and spread in an unpredictable manner.
The realistic training exercise gave firefighters the opportunity to practice their procedures in a typical high-rise block.
As well as providing a fantastic opportunity to improve safety for tenants, the exercise is also an excellent example of best practice to other Registered Providers in the country.
OVH Operational Director of Assets and Investment, Gordon Ronald said: “We have been working in partnership with Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to work on a priceless exercise to improve safety for our tenants. To have the opportunity to stage something on this magnitude is fantastic for the organisation and it also makes sense that we continue to work closely with the fire service.”
Watch Manager Mick Currin of Crosby, who helped to coordinate the exercise, said: “We are extremely grateful to One Vision Housing for offering us this opportunity. This sort of training is as close to the real thing as we can get and it was an excellent opportunity to test our procedures.”
