If in doubt, keep them out!

Merseyside Police in Sefton are re-inforcing the message 'If in doubt keep them out', following reports of Bogus Callers, asking to check the water supply, to check for water leaks, or using other excuses to gain access to people's homes. Sometimes they even pretend to be OVH staff or contractors. 

Margaret Jepson of Home Watch, said:" This type of crime is despicable; victims of distraction burglary can suffer terribly both emotionally and physically. This type of crime can seriously affect their trust and faith in people afterwards."

The Crime Prevention Officers Garry McCabe and Kevin Kehoe say "It is vital for people to remember to check the identity of any stranger who calls at their home, and do not let anyone in who you do not know. Genuine callers will not mind waiting whilst you check their identity.

"Help and support is available from the police, local authorities, and the utility companies, so please make sure you use it. Keep contact telephone numbers handy so checks can be made.

Many people who call at your door are genuine but some are not. Therefore it is vital to take precautions when people call at your home.

These offenders are convincing liars and anyone can be misled. Residents are urged to contact the Police immediately if they think a bogus official calls at their home. We can catch bogus callers with your information.
