Watch what you heat
One Vision Housing are working with Merseyside Fire and Rescue and other local registered social landlords to make residents’ homes safer.
Over 60% of all accidental house fires start in the kitchen. The most common cause of kitchen fires is cooking being left unattended. It takes seconds for a fire to start, so even answering the phone or being distracted by the TV for a few minutes while a pan is on the heat can lead to disaster.
A three-month campaign will encourage residents to take extra care whilst cooking and ensure they have working smoke alarms.
Firefighters will also be promoting safety in the kitchen during Home Fire Safety Checks and distributing the campaign leaflets, which include fire safety advice.
The other registered social landlords involved in the campaign are: Arena, Cobalt Housing, Helena Homes, Knowsley Housing Trust, Liverpool Housing Trust, Liverpool Mutual Homes, The Regenda Group, Riverside and Wirral Partnership Homes.
Top tips for keeping you and your family safe
• Don’t leave pans unattended, even for a short time
• Don’t cook if you have been drinking alcohol
• Use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer, which will make sure the fat doesn’t get too hot
• Don’t fill a chip pan or other deep-fat fryer more than one-third full of oil
• Keep the oven, hob and grill clean - built-up fat and bits of food can start a fire
• Double check that the cooker is off when you have finished cooking
