Seeing the light
Tradesmen from One Vision Housing Property Services have been sharing their skills with a group of local school children.
Young people from Holy Family High School in Thorton have been working closely with maintenance staff to learn useful life skills designed to help them and their families around the home.
One Vision Housing's Community Development Team led on the innovative project and are looking to roll it out to other schools.
Youth Engagement Officer Marie Morgan said:
“It was fantastic to see so many young people interested in learning new skills , improving their motivation and being inspired into making positive choices in their careers.”
Plumbers, electricians and joiners from OVHPS have been teaching the children how to change light bulbs, correct a tripped circuit when the lights fail in their homes, how to put up shelves and how to find the stop plug in the event of a flood.
Electrician Andy Bounds said: “As well as the practical skills we’ve been teaching the children, we also hope to show them that there are good careers available if you have a good trade behind you."
One Vision Housing Property Services formed at the end of September last year and now have nine apprentices covering various aspects of repairs and maintenance whilst at the same time, all attending college to gain qualifications in their chosen trade.
